I feel like more recent depictions of the surfboard do have the fins on the bottom instead of being just a flat line, but I could be hallucinating that. But, in any case, I think the girls will also enjoy that the Dan Slott/Michael Allred run of Silver Surfer gave the board a name: Toomie. Named by Surfer's companion at the time, because of Norrin's constant cry of "To me, my board!"
With modern coloring, Surfer does display a wider range of colors and more dimensionality, and even before that, Ron Lim (one of the classic Marvel Cosmic artists) was really good at making him actually look metallic and reflective.
