Star Trek #1678: Touch of Grey

CAPTAIN'S LOG: Voyager's crew rescue the kids from Solum.

WHY WE LIKE IT: Some nice action for the Voyager characters.

WHY WE DON'T: Someone needs to explain to me how the EMH moves about.

REVIEW: It's time for the Olds to do something, and I kind wish they HADN'T given the kids something to do and just let Janeway, Chakotay, the Doctor and Wesley do their stuff . The kids are just put into a death trap with a Loom, and the monster is just as much a victim of Asencia as they are, and freeing it becomes a needed distraction while everyone escapes. I see the plot mechanics, but we've seen Loom attacks before and this one doesn't add anything new. It's just "something to do" while other characters get the more interesting mission.

Wes is back at the helm of a ship. The Doctor impersonates Janeway and gets "fatally" shot by Asencia. Janeway gets some big speeches. And Chakotay, as usual, is the perfect, supportive friend. The bit with the Doctor is especially good, because we don't realize until we come back from an act brake that it wasn't actually Janeway dying. ESPECIALLY after she shared her plans to retire. It's cop movie rules that the retiree gets killed, and I think it would have worked here too. But I don't mind the fake-out so much since 1) the Doctor is quite humorous (ending on a line from Hamlet is pure EMH, the big ham), and 2) Janeway has really redeemed herself through this series. And not just through HER hologram (and is it me, or are they sort of 'shipping holo-Janeway and the EMH? Are we into it? I would love the irony, since the real Janeway was often so shitty to him).

Solum is left with the spark of civil war, with Gwyn's dad exhorting his people to rise up against Asencia, so there's still a lot of work to do. And it's nice to know Janeway has the kids' back on this. Bring on the two-part finale!

LESSON:
Boldness isn't just for the young.

REWATCHABILITY - Medium-High: There's a lot of running around, but the Voyager crew is on point.
