Who Are the Guardians of the Universe?

Who's This? The Green Lanterns' creators.

The facts: The short blue aliens who created and run the Green Lantern Corps (and before that, the Manhunters) first appeared in Green Lantern #1 (July 1960), creations of John Broome and Gil Kane. They have ever since been associated with the GLC, in comics, cartoons, movies and video games, with a few terms of absence to shake things up (after Millennium, after Emerald Twilight). Originally the males of the same ancient species whose females became the Zamarons, there would eventually be finale Guardians. A few have been named, but Ganthet, who would become Kyle Rayner's mentor during one of the Guardian-less eras, Ganthet, is the only one to get his name in a book title (Ganthet's Tale).
How you could have heard of them: Where there's a Green Lantern Corps, there are usually Guardians, so it's more a matter of not saying "...of the Galaxy" by mistake rather than forgetting all about them.
Example story: Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn #6 (May 1990) "The Dawn" by Keith Giffen, Mark D. Bright and Romeo Tanghal
Just a general look at how they are usually utilized, in this case during Hal Jordan's Corps training days. Context: A giant planet parasite is attacking the citadel where the Guardians live on Oa. A few Corps members, including rookie Hal Jordan, are trying to stop it. It's not going well. The Guardians make the choice they usually do in these circumstances: They bail.
They start to float up and send a giant telepathic head to tell their Lanterns to withdraw and take the loss. Hal is so green (ha!) that he's running on idealism. How do heroes with the "most powerful weapon in the universe" give up? How does a corps of FEARLESS beings just GIVE UP? The ring is never looking for humility, so that's on you, Guardians. Hal flies into the power battery itself and comes out of it over-powered and starts to take care of business.
To their credit, the Blue Boys are quick to go with it, but they admit they don't know how Hal managed it. So they take a particular interest, and being so imperious, it comes off as a reproach.
I think it's hilarious that they had the same personality clashes with Abin Sur...
Quite a graduation ceremony! It also seems like our own Sector 2814 is considered to be in the universe's boonies. So the Guardians are like those bosses who keep mavericks on because they're good at their jobs, but wish those mavericks didn't have any influence on the rest of the workforce. Green Lantern - Union Organizer! Well, maybe after he spends more time with Green Arrow...

Who's Next? Two soldiers and a dog.
