Captain Marvel vs. Thor Fight Analysis

Here we go. First up in the first fight in DC vs., Marvel seemed to be about copyright. A DC hero using Marvel in his name, and a thunder god nominally in the public domain.

For Marvel: Thor
At his best? Oof, no. He's probably wearing the stupidest costume he ever has, with an open mask and open chest concept, plus a 90s XTREME chain on Mjolnir. Almost unrecognizable.
His advantage: He controls lightning, which the Big Red Cheese is dependent on.

For DC: Captain Marvel
At his best? Yes. Though he would gain electricity powers in the new millennium, the fact that he was either called Shazam or the Captain by then means this is the most iconic possible modern Captain Marvel, here off the well-remembered Power of Shazam series.
His advantage: Thor is ONE god; Captain Marvel has the combined powers of several. The Wisdom of Solomon might allow him to trick the Odinson.

Why this match? Both are super-strong powerhouses with a connection to lightning. It's a good match on paper.
Were they Amalgamated? No. Captain Marvel was merged with Captain Mar-Vell (naturally), and Thor with Orion (Kirby might have been proud).
What if they fought their Amalgam Buddy? Had Mar-Vell been alive, I don't think he could have beat one of Earth's Mightiest Mortals. Thor vs. Orion is harder to gauge. Could have gone either way, but I think Thor has the advantage (more in control of his emotions, better weapon).
Better match-ups: Due to their mythological connections, Thor should have been up against Wonder Woman. Captain Marvel would conceptually have been better up against a kid/weakling who turns into a powerhouse, like perhaps the Hulk. (Granted, Thor was once Don Blake, but not anymore, right?) I would just have made the entities able to grab people from across history (we could have had a Guardians/Legion mini-fight, for example, or Two-Gun Kid vs. Jonah Hex) to justify Marvel/Mar-Vell - Billy Batson/Rick Jones action.
If DC vs. Marvel had been fought today: Thor has a better chance of being Top 5. The Captain, less so. I'm calling Thor vs. Diana up for a vote (Diana wins), and The Captain vs. Captain Marvel Carol Danvers in the prelims (she wins).

Play by Play: It's a pray-off!
Is Thor praying... to himself? Don't worry, they're soon punching at each other. The battleground is an amusement park and at one point, Cap is pinned under a fallen Ferris wheel. And the only way to get out from there without losing a second is... to turn into Billy Batson?!?
Are you effing kidding me?! Cap has MORE than enough strength to lift a steel beam off himself, throw it at Thor, etc. He's got the strength of Hercules AND the speed of Mercury. You're telling me that shrinking himself down to a young boy's size (risking getting actually crushed), and turning back, with all the time that entails, is what the moment calls for? It also exposes a connection to lightning that Thor can exploit, so when it's about to strike Billy, Thor interferes with it, turning a Shazam into a Shazaak!
Result: It's Thor over Captain Marvel, or really, over Billy Batson. I call Partial BS. As presented, Cap had to be very dumb and even depowered for Thor to find his weakness. It could easily have been written as an accidental win for Thor, striking Cap with lightning as a last ditch effort, and finding it turned his opponent into a little kid. Thor was always going to win, so why make the DC hero seems so foolish (a character with Wisdom as a power should be a little more clever than this).

Next time:
A quick one.
