"DIS-SO-NANCE!"
TECHNICAL SPECS: First aired Aug.26 2024 as part of that year's Proms. Available on YouTube.IN THIS ONE... Maestro is back.
REVIEW: By now, it's accepted side-canon that the Doctor can break into the Proms via TARDIS screen technology. I guess UNIT can too, as the bane of my existence - I mean, The Vlinx - does so. And of course, Maestro back for another round. It's actually a clever way to introduce "I've Got a Dog", an original song written for The Devil's Chord (part of the alternate reality's Beatles catalog). If you HAVE to play all the Doctor Who music, and therefore MUST play this dumb, off-key ditty, an excuse is perhaps indicated. I also appreciate conductor Alastair King making faces as he's forced by the godling to play this thing.
The Vlinx's role in this, to detect (somehow) Maestro's arrival and figure out the audience has the clap and cheer to counter Maestro's influence (shouldn't that be the Doctor's role?) is basic crowd interaction and a little desperate given the dialog is rather boring despite Jinkx Monsoon's flamboyant delivery - it wasn't going to get much of a rise without the big, robotic applause sign. At least the Doctor's address, once resumed, has a nice message to it. There IS no bad music, so go ahead and whistle, sing, tap your foot, even if you're off-key or off-beat. It's standard Doctor Who stuff - oh, humanity, you're great cuz you can sing - with Gatwa filming it quickly between takes. Bad Music has some qualities, but I can't shake the feeling that everyone's kind of phoning this in. More than in the literal sense, I mean.
VERSIONS: The title was originally believed to be called Pantheon of Discord,
REWATCHABILITY: Low - Really dull for something that involves the madcap Maestro and was written by the show's head writer.
