I'm a little sorry they didn't adjust the competition between Flash and Quicksilver to be RACE rather than a knock-out FIGHT, but that might have opened a can of worms where other heroes would have to compete in different events, say who can help more little old ladies across the street between Superman and Captain America, or who was the best skier between Northstar and the Black Racer.
For DC: Flash (Wally West)At his best? Smack dab in the year where he was learning all those Speed Force tricks!
His advantage: Not only is he the fastest man alive, he's got lots of new powers besides.
For Marvel: Quicksilver
At his best? Was Quicksilver ever really "at his best"? I guess the X-Men movies made him more powerful. This is not that.
His advantage: Mutant fever or second-hand X-mania. Might be more ruthless.
Why this match? They're each universe's premiere super-speedsters.
Were they Amalgamated? No, actually! Flash was combined with the Ghost Rider (hey, both have "racing" capabilities and the latter was much more popular than Pietro, so they really screwed up here) as Speed Demon. Quicksilver ended up amalgamated with Impulse (oh the indignity!) as Mercury (a member of JLX).
What if they fought their Amalgam Buddy? Impulse could race circles around Quicksilver, but Pietro would probably have had a combat advantage over him. As for the Flash vs, Ghost Rider, my money's still on Wally, but it would have been a much more interesting fight.
Better match-ups: I'm convincing myself that Wally vs. Danny Ketch would have been more interesting (both legacy heroes who like speed). Speedsters in the Marvel Universe just aren't as fast as the Flashes. A more thematically consistent match for Quicksilver would have been Impulse's mentor Max Mercury. Not only does he have colors closer to Pietro's, but he was KNOWN AS Quicksilver in the Golden Age. Should have been able to reclaim his trademark.
If DC vs. Marvel had been fought today: I'm afraid this would still be the lazy old match-up. Wally is once again the main Flash, and Marvel never really developed the speedster niche.
Play by Play: Honestly, Quicksilver never had a chance.
They even have to throw an exploding truck and passengers in danger at them to keep it going longer. Flash saves the victims, and Quicksilver proves his moral inferiority by using the opportunity to knock Wally down. But he hesitates to give the felling blow out of guilt, Wally recovers and punches Pietro out.Result: Yes, like we always knew he would. I mean, COME ON. The most boring, obvious fight in the lot? Yes, I think so.
Next time: Let's dip our toe in the water.
