"It's his legacy."
TECHNICAL SPECS: First aired Jan.26 2023. Released as part of Doctor Who: The Collection - Season 9 and available on YouTube.IN THIS ONE... Jo finds a Sea Devil hatchling.
REVIEW: Jo is back and she hasn't missed a beat despite having lost two people in her life - Sarah Jane, who has left her the sonic lipstick, and Cliff, who, like Stewart Bevan, has passed away. It's a touching tribute to both, the latter most especially, of course, and there's therefore an environmental message to the piece. Climate change is screwing with Sea Devil hatching cycles - so later encounters like Warriors of the Deep and The War Between the Land and the Sea seem inevitable - and she saves two girls exploring seaside caves from a defensive parent. Cue cute baby Devil and Jo slyly making them put away their phones so the secret isn't revealed to the world.
Makes use of the classic Sea Devil costume and even has some poor soul walk out of the ocean in the credits. The minisode is a little schmaltzy at times, like when the girls ask how they can help, like this is some kind of ecological PSA, but it's hard not to go into that territory when it's saying goodbye to performers who have passed, and arguably, to Jo herself since this is the final boxed set for her era. I also think that, given how many children and grandchildren she's meant to have, it's a missed opportunity not to make one or both girls part of the Jones brood instead of wannabe Sparrow & Nightingale, but Jo wouldn't have had to explain quite so many things to the audience if it were so. I get it, but I'd have rather filled out her world and imagined we got some Jo Jones Adventures I never got to see.
REWATCHABILITY: Medium-High - Every Jo Grant-Jones is precious, and this is likely the last one.
