Who's This? An East Indian sorceress.
The facts: Jinx first appears in Tales of the Teen Titans #56 (August 1985), created by Marv Wolfman and Chuck Patton to supplement a new Fearsome Five. She remains with the group for most of her appearances (in Titans, Adventures of Superman and Outsiders), eventually adopting a bald look, sans headdress. She would later join the all-female Villainy Inc. in early 2000s Wonder Woman issues. In the New52 and Rebirth, she's back with the Fearsome Five in the Forever Evil storyline, but scores a lot of cameos whenever there's some mystical stuff going down, like in Lazarus Planet, for example. She's in the KO issues of Titans even as we speak, in sequences taking place on Gemworld. How you could have heard of her: Though she looks very different with her pink hair, Jinx was turned into a Teen Titans Go antagonist, which is probably why she turns up so often these days in the DCU. The live action Titans show also made use of her (with pinkish hair, I'm surprised that hasn't migrated to the main version yet), played by Lisa Ambalavanar.
Example story: Tales of the Teen Titans #57-58 (September-October 1985) by Marv Wolfman, Chuck Patton and Romeo TanghalJinx's first appearance was as a shadow in a tube at STAR Labs, so we're looking at her first FULL appearance, and indeed, at two issues because there's not much to go on with a single one (too many heroes and villains to cater to). We know that she committed crimes in India, was captured, but they didn't know how to contain her. So, sure, STAR Labs is there for all your inhumane imprisonment needs. Let's start with her awakening in the Fearsome Five's lair and Psimon telepathically teaches her English (she normally speaks Urdu).A rude awakening regardless, and a peek at the type of magic she uses. It's a lot like Zatanna's, without the backwards spelling, essentially - animating matter and playing with the elements. At least, that's what this scene, and the next panel (below) evoke.Once she's mastered English, she officially joins the team, though she doesn't think they're bloodthirsty enough. She's a killer, alright. Note that Shimmer slowly turning Cyborg's new human-looking plastic body into water looks in any way comfortable. Makes Jinx smile, anyway. We also discover she brings something else to the team: A magical danger sense:The following issue shows more tricks - my evaluation of her spellbook was too limited - and possibly how she might have ended up on the wrong end of a murder charge (even if it's not necessarily a temporary effect). After the rest of the team get knocked about by the Titans, Jinx retreats to an alley and assesses the situation: She can see how the Fearsome Five have been defeated in the past. But before she can act on it, Jericho takes her over, and that's that. For all of them. It's kind of a wonder that she stuck with the team to this day.
Who's Next? A Navajo pilot.
