Since Torg Eternity is my main game, and has been for three years, no surprise that I would expose one of its monsters earlier than later. And I've got seven worlds to choose from! Let's go with the Cyberpapacy, then, which is NOT a Cosm we have spent a lot of time in.
Monster: Cybergoyle
Game/Product: Torg Eternity/Day OneWriting: Torg Eternity team. Art: Gunship Revolution
Origin: The merging of the Medieval Catholic Church and Cyberpunk made the Cybergoyle a natural, ESPECIALLY since the Maelstrom Bridge fell in France and the Cyerbpope is French. When we think of gargoyles, we may well think of Notre-Dame de Paris, and even if Paris is a Core Earth hardpoint, and you wouldn't find Cybergoyles there, the inspiration still works.
Fear Level: They have the Fear special ability, but it's based on its sudden motion. I guess it's startling and unsettling. Of course, it must mean there are gargoyles everywhere, or else PCs would expect the statues to be robotic hunter killers. They probably will regardless, so they feel like a one-time surprise.
Danger Level: A mid-level threat that crouches between the Church Police Streetbeater and the angelic Hosts, but closer to the Street Cop. Honestly, most PCs will have more trouble with the Police because they have powerful ranged weapons and show up in numbers. But if you need a single opponent with a melee focus, you'll find it here.
Personal example: In our Day One adventure, I used a chrome Cybergoyle and because the PCs had just undergone their Moment of Crisis and had barely any abilities. It was pretty scary, and a surprise. I prefer the chrome model to the "camouflaged" stone statues simply because it better represents the Cyber in Cyberpapacy.
I wonder if: They shouldn't have just been called Cygoyles. That's what I usually call them.
I'll probably return to Torg on a regular basis, at least until we've looked at a monster from each Cosm (and then, there's original Torg, which has its own unique critters). Any Cosm requests?
