This Week in Geek (13-19/10/08)

Buys

Lately, we've been making a lot of 2001 jokes and references here at home, which made me realize I didn't have a proper copy of the film on DVD (just an old VHS). Do you know how tedious it is to fast forward that old tape through the boring bits? So a nice 2001 with lots of extras for me. Yay!

Plus, The Unit Season 3 came out and I snatched it. On of the best season premieres in recent memory, and stands as a very good season despite being cut short by the Writer's Strike.

"Accomplishments"

I flipped two DVDs this week. The first is the 3rd Doctor classic adventure, The Sea Devils. I don't think I'd seen it before, but can see why it's generally well regarded. Roger Delgado as the Master eats up the screen as usual. The Sea Devils are slightly more convincing than I thought they would be. And the production values, helped along by great cooperation from the Royal Navy, are extremely high. The sheer number of vehicles involved is staggering, for example. The DVD includes the usual audio and text commentaries (director Michael Bryant especially a joy), a half-hour "making of", and small bits like footage taken by Navy personnel. Not the best package from the Beneath the Surface boxed set, but still good.

The other DVD I've been nursing is Shaun of the Dead. I was waiting until I'd finished Spaced to see it and I wasn't disappointed. It might as well be Tim and Daisy's further adventures if not for the name changes. Shaun succeeds as both a comedy and a zombie picture, mixing elements of both. A comic homage, not a parody. The DVD includes 2 amusing audio commentary tracks and an informative text commentary, deleted or alternate scenes, outtakes, illustrated plot holes that tell you just what happened to characters outside Shaun's POV (with which we stick throughout), a short comic book story that appeared in 2000 A.D. (but you'll need a very big screen to really read it), make-up tests, special effects stuff, casting calls, a "time capsule" in which Pegg and Wright take you through the script outline (you decide if the movie changed substantially), and more besides. A good package!

New Unauthorized Doctor Who CCG cards: 11 - Three from The Sea Devils, just to get Roger Delgado's Master in there, and the rest from Arc of Inifinity, which I'll be stripping down over the course of the week.

Someone Else's Post of the Week
Given this past week, I just have to send you to a Galactus-related blog. And that would be Comic Coverage's Bizarro Galactus Poll. Personally? I like the first one. Galactus - Lumberjack of Worlds!

Ah, Shaun of the Dead. One of my favourite movies ever.
Turns out I'm the only Spaced/zombie movie fan who really, really can't stand Shaun of the Dead. *Sigh* And hey, when it comes to zomromcoms, you really can't get better than Peter Jackson's Braindead anyway, in my opinion.

I still like Spaced better.

How do you feel about Hot Fuzz?
I'm yet to see Hot Fuzz, actually, though my flatmate has it, so I may grab it off the shelf at some point. Honestly though, SotD pretty much put me off of "big screen" Simon Pegg, so I'm yet to see any of his other films. It looks like I may make an exception for the upcoming Star Trek, though.
