837. Rest and Recreation!
PUBLICATION: Star Trek #18, DC Comics, September 1985
CREATORS: Paul Kupperberg (writer), Tom Sutton and Ricardo Villagran (artists)
STARDATE: 8293.6 (follows the last issue)
PLOT: Scotty is on R&R at Starbase VII, which is run by an old friend of his, Joshua Helmes, kept from his own command by a mistake in his youth. After a lecture, Scotty takes a cadet under his wing and together they investigate the theft and subsequent burning of paper towels from the cargo bay. By following the clues, and narrowly avoiding getting murdered on a couple of occasions, they figure out the paper towel barrels were full of a narcotic refined by the ion flow of the trash disintegrator. Scotty stops them, saves the starbase and exposes Helmes as the mastermind.
CONTINUITY: None.
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - Seduction of the innocent
REVIEW: A mystery that's interesting for a few pages, but no more, possibly due to all the adult guest stars looking alike, and a climax that amounts to Scotty grunting over a console. The reason to read this one lies in the relationship between Scotty and Cadet Gulder and all the double-entendres the creative team seems to delight in putting in. Lines like "I thought I'd loosen the lad up with a few belts" and the guys jumping all over each other raise a knowing chuckle if nothing else. Now start thinking about Helmes' youthful mistake...
