915. Partners?
PUBLICATION: Star Trek v.2 #17, DC Comics, March 1991
CREATORS: Howard Weinstein (writer), Ken Hooper and Bob Dvorak (artists)
STARDATE: Unknown (follows issue #15)
PLOT: The Needrans are trading partners with both the Federation and the Klingons, but their convoys (and ships from both sides) are being attacked by a massive, cloaked Tyrion ship. A stooge from the Needran mining company is betraying them, having been promised the governorship of the planet. At the same time, he's working with a Klingon captain who thinks the Klingons will rule through the Tyrions. Kirk and a Klingon Commodore cooperate to try and find the leak that is selling out the Needran trade routes...
CONTINUITY: None.
DIVERGENCES: Commodore as a Klingon rank? Cooperation with Klingons is highly suspect at any time before ST VI, especially Kirk's attitude and McCoy working on Klingons.
LETTERS PAGE BIT OF THE DAY - Early details about ST VI
REVIEW: Howard Weinstein becomes the new regular writer with this issue, and on through the rest of the series. I can't quite summon up any enthusiasm about it, quite frankly. I've read a few of his novels and they follow a pattern similar to this comic's - various factions are set up and the characters are dumped into the middle of things. Peter David's trademark humor is all but gone, there are no subplots to speak of, and the Klingons are reduced to trading disputes. The lackluster script isn't helped by the rather amateurish art either.
