927. Where There's a Will...
PUBLICATION: Star Trek v.2 #26, DC Comics, December 1991
CREATORS: Howard Weinstein (writer), Gordon Purcell and Arne Starr (artists)
STARDATE: 8562.8 (follows the last issue)
PLOT: While Sulu and Uhura visit an old Starfleet Academy haunt and discuss his plans for the future, Captain Kirk reels from the news that he's inherited a wife and title from planet Pilkor. His old buddy's wife tells him he was murdered after he uncovered his government's secret plans for colonization, strange for an isolationist planet. Kirk asks Admiral Nogura's permission to investigate, and is given it since there's been Romulan activity in that section. Are the Pilkorians and the Romulans involved in a Federation-menacing plot..?
CONTINUITY: Admiral Nogura last appeared in issue #12. Sulu's edging towards a captaincy as ST VI looms.
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - Sounds like the bible text for Captain Calhoun of New Frontier fame.
REVIEW: More set-up for the Pilkor storyline, with Victoria Leigh laying down even more exposition. Nogura's a little better characterized, but still an exposition device. I've got nothing against the plot itself, but I was more interested in the scenes between Uhura and Sulu (I love it when she's sassy). Spock and McCoy also get a cute moment. Weinstein just has trouble writing Kirk, I think, who comes off as something of a sad sack. I miss his sense of humor.
