Dinosaur Week II: Now It's Paleontological!

One of the most popular themes broached on the SBG last year was dinosaurs. Folks can't get enough of them! They ARE hard to resist: Monsters that lived right here on Earth! And they're back! So to get us in the mood, here are the "King of the Dinosaurs" of each era mockumented by the "Walking with..." people. No herbivores here!

Late Triassic: King CoelophysisThese relatively tiny scavengers could still gang up on bigger non-dinosaur super-predators like Postosuchus if they smelled weakness. Postosuchus gets a scratch, there be bad times comin'! Favorite eats: Lungfish.

Late Jurassic: King Allosaurus
Often mistaken for a small Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus is cooler thanks to its frowny, menacing brow. The most famous of these, Big Al, had a pretty interesting life. Favorite eats: Steakosaurus Stegosaurus.

Late Jurassic/the seas: King Liopleurodon
At 150 tons, 25 meters and maybe more than 100-year lifespans, these monsters are the largest underwater predators ever. Favorite eats: Allosaurus! I am so not joking!
Consequently, they are my very favorite on this list.

Cretaceous/the skies: King Ornithocheirus
Ladies and gentlemen, the largest animal to ever take to the skies. We're talking a 12-meter wingspan (that's about 36 feet for you Imperial System folk) and a body bigger than a man's. Favorite eats: Fish. Only healthy living for Ornithocheirus.

Cretaceous: Tyrannosaurus Rex
When "King" is in your nomenclature, you know you've reached the top of the food chain. Favorite eats: Any dinosaur will do, really. That's why they call him the King.

More featured dinosaurs through the week!
