Star Trek 1007: The Battle Within

1007. The Battle Within

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: The Next Generation #8, DC Comics, May 1990

CREATORS: Michael Jan Friedman (writer), Gordon Purcell and Pablo Marcos (artist)

STARDATE: 43266.7 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: The Pilot-possessed Data gives the Enterprise-D an ultimatum - give the Mezartine requested supplies or be destroyed. Riker beams over in a supply crate and destroys the Pilot's interface with his ship, sending it flying out of control towards a star. Picard offers help in exchange for the return of his officers. The Pilot agrees and it is estimated that the Pilot will eventually expire and the Mezartine will be taken out of the picture.

CONTINUITY: None.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - One size fits all.
REVIEW: Meh. An extremely talky resolution despite Riker's ninja mission, and one wonders why Picard tells Data's little brother (from the subplot) he played an important part in recovering the android. Though Data's connection with the boy did make his personality peek through the Pilot's for a moment, it was only Riker's sabotage which produced a victory. So while I've liked this run to date, I'll call this the worst issue yet. A poor man's The Schizoid Man, and that wasn't a very good episode to begin with. It doesn't help that once again, the dark colors obscure the art, and generally, Purcell is less dynamic than Marcos on pencils.
