Star Trek 1092: Ceremony of Innocence

1092. Ceremony of Innocence

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: The Next Generation #74, DC Comics, August 1995

CREATORS: Michael Jan Friedman (writer), Gordon Purcell and Terry Pallot (artists)

STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Gowron accuses the Federation of having attacked the Tholians, dragging the Klingon Empire into a war that could give the Duras a foothold. Picard denies it of course, and proof is found when the Enterprise damages a Tholian ship and its first officer, the sympathetic one, comes aboard to explain himself in lieu of his wounded captain. He reveals that a Klingon bird-of-prey has attacked Tholian outposts, sending them off to retaliate against the Klingons and their allies. Gowron recognizes the ship as the Taj, which disappeared not long ago near the planet where Picard left Hugh and the rogue Borg...

CONTINUITY: See previous issues. Another appearance by Ben the waiter (Lower Decks). Picard executes the Picard Maneuver (The Battle). Hugh and the rogue Borg were last seen in Descent Part II.

DIVERGENCES: See previous issues.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Wonderful you. It had to be youuuuuuuuuu!
REVIEW: The story gets even bigger with the possible addition of the Borg, and we'll certainly find out Hugh's fate in the next issue. I also hope we'll find out more about the Tholians as a race with their first officer as an ally. Not much about Kyle Riker here despite Will having a few words with his fiancé. I wish they'd done more with it, perhaps in place of a scene with starbase personnel the readers don't know. The overall arc, War & Madness, is probably best read in a single sitting. Chapters will not seem so thin then, and the large panels will allow the story to fly by in a cohesive whole.
