Star Trek 1191: War and Peace

1191. War and Peace

PUBLICATION: Starfleet Academy #4, Marvel Comics, March 1997

CREATORS: Chris Cooper (writer), Chris Renaud and Andy Lanning (artists)

STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)

PLOT: In a possible future, Nog and Decker avenge a Klingon massacre on Deep Space 9, while in another, the members of Omega Squad have negotiated the peace. Everything hinges on this moment. The kids fly on a runabout mission with Commander Zund, who is injured by a Klingon attack. Omega Squad commandeers the bird-of-prey, but both it and the runabout crash on the planet below. In the night, Pava and a Klingon she met while an exchange student on the Klingon homeworld find each other, fight... and kiss...

CONTINUITY: The alternate future presented features Deep Space Nine and a dead Kira. Another has Goldstein negotiate a permanent treaty with the Klingons (at the end of the war started in The Way of the Warrior). The gang attempts Kirk's cross-beaming trick from the end of The Search for Spock. Boothby appears.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - 90s Nog!
REVIEW: One of the best uses of "alternate timelines" I've seen, with two versions of events being presented as fact, and flashbacks to the present showing us how either outcome may be possible, especially in the wake of Pava's revelations. Is her future husband the Klingon? There's action, but also the "high school hi-jinks" we've come to expect not only from Nog, but from the other characters as well. Some neat alien designs in the art as well, and nice links to Nog's home series. Part two should be fun!

The cover art is just so instantly recognizable as "Marvel 90s" that even in a Star Trek book I expect wordless double-page fight scenes and skin-tight, over-muscled Starfleet officers . . .
