Reign of the Supermen #106: Super Powers Superman

Source: Kenner's Super Powers Collection, Series One (1984)
Type: ToyOh how I love the Super Powers action figures line! Sad thing is, I didn't gobble them all up at the time and consequently don't have this sweet sweet Superman! Removable cape! Squeeze his legs and he throws a punch! (I still have Aquaman, Green Lantern, Darkseid, Dr. Fate, Hawkman and Brainiac, plus crap I picked up in yard sales like Desaad and an off-model Parademon. And I still play around with them.)

Now, there are some handsome action figures coming out these days (mostly from DC Direct), but gosh, the Super Powers guys were FUN. I still prefer their cloth capes to the semi-rigid rubber used on many figures today, and the idea that you could make them punch, swim, run, fly, cast a spell, etc. with a quick squeeze made them the top superhero figure of the 80s, and still relevant today. Some of them even had extra gimmicks, like Darkseid's Omega Beams, produced when you shone a light on the top of his head.

If I were made of money or had a time machine... But the latter hasn't been invented yet, and as for the former, a look at eBay shows loose figures starting at around 10$, and carded ones often hitting and passing 60$. Never mind the vehicles! Look at this sweet bunch:
And way too many holes in my collection to ever make it affordable. But I can dream...

oh yeah this was a great action figure line! all together i had about 7 - 8 of em including the Steppenwolf one you get in the mail with enough proofs of purchase. among the best figures in this line were the Martian Manhunter,Drakside, Brianiac and Green Lantern. this was one of the great toy lines of the 80's. i used to really like the Super Powers cartoon that went along with the figures.

I never realised they brought out so many! Crikey, isn't that last one Tyr? Of all the Legion related characters to make an action figure out of that's an odd one, but cool nonetheless.

I agree. An odd mix of DC's greatest heroes and villains + New Gods from the Jack Kirby Super Powers comics series + characters who appeared on the Super-Friends continuation titled Super Powers.

Between my brother and me, we had the entire first wave except the ever-elusive Wonder Woman, and we had Firestorm, Darkseid, Mantis, Captain Marvel, Cyclone and Mr. Freeze from the later ones. Plus the Supermobile and Lex Soar 7, but sadly never a Batmobile or the Hall of Justice (although I new people who had each of those).

Unfortunately, once I started growing out of toys, my brother and a friend of his developed a habit of destroying or burying action figures, so they've all pretty much been lost to the mists of time.

For some interesting insight on where the toyline may have gone, check out this article:

Parademon may be off-model but I do believe Kirby did the redesign.

Yes, that's true, in the Super Powers mini-series.

Probably because the standard model looked too much like Mantis.

I had a few random Super Powers figures, but I went more for the Secret Wars line.

Man, did I back the wrong horse.

I have a couple of those too - Doctor Doom and Wolverine - but damn those scratchable black details. They came right off!
i also had a lot of Secret Wars figures too. they were sculpted better but not as articulate. what really carried that toy line was the Secret Wars comic book series which was among the best comic book gems of the 80s.

Sure, name recognition and all, but the line had plenty of figures that had nothing to do with Secret Wars, like Daredevil and Silver Surfer.

Or did they start doing Secret Wars II figures (and if so, where's my Potty-Training Beyonder?)

I had the first two rows of figures, The Super-plane thing, the Batmobile, The Hall of Justice, Steppenwolf and a mail-away Clark Kent! I was spoiled rotten!

I still have most of them, but to say they're in disrepair is putting it lightly. Darkseid is missing an arm, the parademon is missing both arms, I lost a yellow cape years ago, so Doctor Fate and Robin had to share the one that I had left. These were really great toys.

Haha. yeah my Darkseid is also a one-armed man (Run!!!).

I've lost GL's lantern and Aquaman's trident too. Booo.
