Uncle Sam's First DC Comics Appearance?

Oh the pain of being in the public domain... Quality Comics was already publishing Uncle Sam comics when this ad started appearing in the back of DC (then National) comics.
(From Sensation Comics #4, April 1942)
And it would be more than a decade before DC would buy up Quality's character catalog. Tsk tsk. Wait... how can an American icon be public domain like that? It goes against everything I know about America!

So happy 4th, Yanks! I hope you all have "How You Can Defend Your Home" in your personal libraries. Uncle Sam says you should!

... English planes?

That should say ENGLISH-SPEAKING planes, presumably.

Considering the time, I think they're talking about British planes. But being American, they missed the memo that not all British people are English.
