Halo's Gotta Get Her Date On

Batman and the Outsiders Annual #1 - Page 41
Epilogue: Three days later on July 7th. So yes, Halo made it to D-Day with time to spare. Three days, in fact, more than enough time for Batman to debrief the team. No wait, they've had no contact with him since they got back from saving freedom!
Oh wait, they didn't check their HQ yet. I don't know why they even have one if they can afford not to go there for three or more days. I can only imagine Batman's angry unanswered post-its on the bulletin board.
You wanna bet Alfred wrote this note? As if you'd ever get any fan mail, Rex, even from awkward "flounders". So okay, Batman may or may not have sent his first ever bit of encouragement to his team via snail mail - not in person though, too scared of the resulting hugs - but we want to hear about Halo's first date!

Like any teenage girl, she's stressing and doesn't know what to wear. Even though I can hardly believe what a date even entails. And wouldn't you know it? The doorbell rings and she's wet-haired and buck naked! But somehow...
Is this something her blue illusion aura can do? Because if not, I want Katana to midwife all my dates from now on! And look, he's a cat person just like she is. Aww. Wait. Gabrielle has been adopted by Bruce "Batman" Wayne and his mothered by Katana, and THIS is the fluffy welcome Phil gets? Oh man, the comedy gold Barr wasted by not making this an issue-length intimidation joke...
Unless maybe... That bat-signal signature makes it look like the mysterious figure in the foreground is Batman, following the kids on their date (if not, that signature is totally inappropriate to end a nearly Batman-less issue on). We'll just have to wait for issue #14, around Winter Olympics time, to find out. Because yes, plenty of date action!
See? Subplots galore! And you know what that means: HILARITY.

That is not Batman. Batman would never even think to himself, "If only they don't see me..." They WOULDN'T see him and he damn well knows it.

Merry Christmas!

A WELL-WRITTEN Batman, sure. ;-)

You're thinking of modern ninja Batman who has super powers. Back then Batman was fallible and a likable character.

Though I did prefer a more human Batman, the Batman in Outsiders wasn't even at the level of Barr's work in actual Batman books. The way he treats and uses his team is incredibly stupid. How can DC's smartest hero make such a hash of group strategies? It's a big part of why B&TO bugs me so much.

Because he's not DC's smartest hero. That honor goes to Superman with his super-intelligence. Can Bruce Wayne build robot duplicates of himself that pass for the real deal? Maybe we're dealin in different eras...I quit DC post-Crisis, so maybe they decided to make Batman a super-genius on par with Superman in the late '80s.

But I would say even the Chief from the original Doom Patrol is smarter than Bruce Wayne. Or Magnus of Metal men fame. Probably others as well.

After all, Batman assembled the Outsiders: how smart can he be?

Post-Crisis, they did make Bruce Wayne the smartest man in the room.

Not a scientific genius necessarily (though he's not bad), but certainly Sherlock Holmes level, a great strategist, and the best long-term planner.

I much prefer Batman being smarter than Superman. If Superman's already got all those powers AND is smarter than everyone else.... that's just too much. He can be smart, just not Super-smart.

I'd agree with that.

My Superman is the post-Crisis Superman who was humanized in large part by making him bright but not a genius.
