Snapshots of Jimmy Olsen #41: Golden Age Jimmy

Source: 1st in Action Comics #6 (1938)
Type: Precursor/The real deal (since retconned)
Continuing on from last week, this is Jimmy as continuity experts would later place him in stories taking place before his true first appearance on the radio show. Jimmy is just an office boy, and a blond one at that! Unnamed office boy Jimmy DOES wear the bow tie, however, so the claim isn't groundless. This roughly sketched-in character would appear a number of times, including the cover of Superman #3 which reprints that first story, until the radio version is finally transplanted into the comics with Superman #13 (1941). Even so, he didn't appear much, and then disappeared completely, until the TV show started, and in 1953, using Jimmy in the comics again became a no-brainer, and he even got his own series! Not bad for someone who'd been away for some half a dozen years by that time!

Though 1953 is too early to fit in the Silver Age proper (starting date 1956), it's hard to think of 1952's Jimmy as anything but Silver Age. His adventures are very much the kind of thing he would get up to through the 50s and 60s. So how many appearances for the Golden Age Jimmy if we don't count any of his 1950s adventures? Rather few. At a guess, less that 25 sporadic stories across 13 years.

Then the Golden Age Jimmy became the Earth-2 Jimmy and was allowed to live a richer, fuller life, but that's really another Snapshot, isn't it?

Very interesting, the way that Golden Age evolved into Earth-2.

That unnamed office boy is the analog to the Jimmy Olsen from "Smallville" who got killed off, to be replaced later by his younger brother Jimmy. All differences between Golden Age Jimmy and Earth-Two Jimmy are to be thusly accounted for.
