One Panel #378: Blackhawk, Island Hero!

Now covering books on the stands in May of 1941...
From "The Origin of Blackhawk" by Will Eisner, Bob Powell and Chuck Cuidera, Military Comics #1 (August 1941)

Quality publishes the first issue of Military Comics and introduces Blackhawk, comics' most enduring aviator ace. While the Blackhawks we know do not yet exist, he does lead the "Blackhawk Squadron", and Blackhawk Island is already a fully-realized place. Blackhawk's success led to him getting his own series in 1944 while simultaneously starring in Military (and Modern, the name was changed after the war). In 1956, Quality collapsed and sold its characters to DC Comics, but it didn't stop Blackhawk. He kept flying under the DC banner until the late 60s and coming back every so often to shout "Hawk-a-a-a!".

Blackhawk was even a radio star in 1950. In 1952, he had his own movie serial, and he's set to once again become a movie star, with Steven Spielberg's name attached to the project. Watch for him to appear again in One Panel, given his long and successful career.
