Before All-Star Squadron, There Was... the Invaders!

At DC, Roy Thomas is best known as the Great Preserver of Golden Age Concepts in the 80s, using both All-Star Squadron (then Young All-Stars) and Secret Origins to keep the flame alive. But his missionary work started while he was at Marvel, re-introducing Timely's World War II characters as a group, first in Avengers #71 (1969), then developing the "Invaders" as a series almost six years later, first with a Giant-Sized issue, then 41 issues+an Annual he either wrote or edited. Took a while, but he got there. But even then, one gets the feeling it's the DC characters he really wanted to work with.
Still, The Invaders proved to be an energetic strip thank to Frank Robbins' pencils, which really had a Golden Age vibe to them. I might very easily compare the work to Kirby's Golden Age work, in particular, Captain America. And the series could be very good to Cap. Riffling through some of the issues, we have him kissing a Valkyrie as Nazis look on (issue 2)...
...destroying Baron Blood (the first time) in issue 9...
...and beating up a bunch of Ratzi supervillains after getting waterboarded WHILE CHAINED TO A WALL!
Hey look, the Human Torch and Sub-Mariner got their licks in, but for me, the Invaders were only ever about Cap in his first prime.
