One Panel #427-430: July 1941 Roundup

Going through what's left of July 1941 releases...
From Hercules: "Cave-In at the Wolf Gulch Gold Mine" by Reed Randall, Hit Comics #15 (September 1941)

You can't go wrong with a splash panel of a superhero strongman keeping a mine from collapsing, so that's where I'm gonna start. Everybody safe? Good, let's keep going...

From Zoro, The Mystery Man: "Mystery At Manor Hotel" by Mac Raboy, Master Comics #17 (August 1941)

Some animal action for the next couple panels. First Zoro's cheetah takes care of a bad guy in the pages of Fawcett's Master Comics.

From Mr. Scarlet: "The Black Clown" by Jack Binder, Wow Comics #3 (September 1941)

Then, Mr. Scarlet finds himself in a "tight squeeze" courtesy of a snake. Nice pun. Mr. Scarlet has largely fallen into obscurity, but he was apparently co-created by Jack Kirby and did show up in one of those "Crisis" ("Crisis in Tomorrow") stories the Justice League of America used to do, as a denizen of Earth-S. No Who's Who entry though. Later, Jerry Ordway would throw Pinky Butler into Power of Shazam, but a Kingdom Come appearance would throw his legacy out of joint, and put the Mister Scarlet name in the villains column.

From Detective Sergeant Carey: "The Radio Bandits"by Joe Donohoe, More Fun Comics #71 (September 1941)

So that takes care of the gridlock, we can move on to August 1940 releases next week. As for Detective Sgt. Carey, a Chinatown copper, this is from his second-to-last story. He'd been with More Fun since issue 14, and 72 would be his last. Are they making room for a new superhero strip? Stick around to find out!
