One Panel #726: Canadian Thanksgiving

From Justice Society of America: "Food for Starving Patriots" by Gardner Fox and Joe Gallagher, All-Star Comics #14 (January 1943)

Today is Canadian Thanksgiving and when I was a kid, it was just a paid holiday, a day off from school and work, meant to thank the Good Lord for Canada's abundant harvests, the second Monday of October. In my family, there were no traditions, not even a special dinner. It held the same cultural weight as Victoria Day (or if you're an American, things like Columbus Day). I was under the impression that it was motivated by religion (the word Grace in the French "Action de GrĂ¢ce"), but it seems the holiday's origins are purely agrarian, dating back to the Middle Ages. Which of course would have had a religious component, but still. English-speaking Canadians adopted the American Thanksgiving traditions of the turkey dinner and more recently, the culture has spread to parts of French Canada as well. You see it on TV often enough... But hey, at least we don't roast a turkey barely a month from Christmas!

So here's to Hawkman's tiny portion. The JSA doesn't need to loosen their belts. (Starman's miscolored holiday hat, however, is a whole other question.)
