One Panel #730-731: Myth and Marvel

From Captain Marvel: "The Lost Lightning" by Dave Berg, America's Greatest Comics #5 (December 1942)

In the current Shazam series, Mark Waid has been having Billy Batson struggle with the gods who make up the acronym SHAZAM messing with him, giving him their worst qualities as well as their greatest powers, in an effort to get rid of him. Their first attempt goes back to the wacky 1940s and this story, which shows Greek gods are fickle, just like in the myths. And Solomon too, I guess, though he's not in this one (Dave Berg didn't limit him to the acronym gods). But this is just to say, if you haven't checked out Waid's Shazam, you should!

From "The Sky People" by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, Captain Marvel Adventures #17 (November 1942)

Bonus! Forget Greece, what about Egypt? This same month, Captain Marvel also fought a mummy! In New York! Well, why not?

October 1942 also had The Big Red Cheese appear in TWO issues of Whiz Comics (as the newsstand flies, anyway), but that book had more than just Cap between its covers, as we'll see next week...

"Hold on there, Bud!" is now my superhero cry. Screw "Avengers Assemble!"...
