Who's the Fisherman?

Who's This? Aquaman's catch of the day.

The facts: A Bob Haney/Nick Cardy creation, the Fisherman first appeared in Aquaman #21 (June 1965) and clashes a few times with the King of the Seven Seas, sometimes as a stooge of other villains like the Shark and Kobra. Since he is patently ridiculous, he also fought Blue Devil and G'nort. During Infinite Crisis, he was shot dead after killing several members of the GCPD, or so it seemed since an autopsy revealed he was too young to be the original. There have, in fact, been several other Fishermen, which is surprising unless villains by cheap I.P.s off one another when they start out. The original was given a crazy interdimensional origin in Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #49 (April 2007) and became more of a threat. He was recently drafted into the Suicide Squad and apparently died in War for Earth-3 #1 (May 2022).
How you could have heard of him: He did appear in the Aquaman Filmation cartoon, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, The Flashpoint Paradox animated movie, AND Aquaman: King of Atlantis, so he's a big cartoon star.
Example story: Aquaman #58 (November 1977) "Through a Past Darkly" by David Michelinie and Jim Aparo
The Fisherman is working for Kobra in this one, and he's been tasked with ambushing Aquaman in the Aqua-Cave, which apparently, has very little security. To my mind, the Fisherman had one shtick and that was extending a fishing pole from his belt. But no, he's got loads of other weapons that could be used in fishing. Including depth charges. I'm not saying it's LEGAL fishing. He's a villain, after all.
That net would normally be easy to take care of, but he's given it the ability to change local pressure to give Aquaman...
Which really makes me wonder how Aquaman deals with that during his normal commutes, but whatever. While Arthur is unconscious, the Fisherman kills him--no, no, actually, he ties him to a lighthouse as the sun is about to set. As soon as it's dark, Aquaman will fry! And just to make sure the hero can escape, he immediately leaves in his cool speedboat so he can't confirm the death.
I guess it's Kobra's fault. Needless to say, Aquaman escapes. With the helps of hermit crabs who can cut through his bonds. Makes me wonder if Michelinie had ever seen a hermit crab. But we don't see the Fisherman again in this issue, so you'll just have to track it down yourself if you want to see how it ends...

What gives?! No telescoping fishing pole?! I feel robbed! Did the Comics Code Authority finally put its foot down re: this penis enlargement joke?

Who's Next? The original speedster.

I really liked Busiek's retcin that the stupid hat was the real villain, and a living thing in.its own right.

That was one of the first Aquaman books I ever read as a kid, which led me to believe that the Fisherman was some kind of major nemesis for years, on par with Black manta or Ocean Master.
Not so much, it turns out.

Still like his color scheme and weird hood/helmet thing, ludicrous as the overall schtick is.

He might be #3 on the list, right after those guys. Aquaman doesn't have a deep bench of rogues.
