Doctor Who #1080: Jovanka Airlines

"Please note that Time-Flight may be behind you."

TECHNICAL SPECS: First aired Aug.21 2018. Released as part of Doctor Who: The Collection - Season 19 and available on YouTube.

IN THIS ONE... Tegan explains a Doctor boxed set like it's emergency instructions for a plane.

REVIEW: Ok, yes, it's a promo and doesn't really have a chance of being declared canon, but it's the first of a large collection of shorts produced from THE Collection of Doctor Who blurays, many of which ARE in-universe scenes. Janet Fielding is definitely Tegan, apparently slumming it as a flight attendant despite owning her own airline. She helps us navigate the disc's features and extras and makes a lot amusing jokes relating to Season 19's stories (with attendant/punchline clips). And when you think that's all there is, bam, the camera turns on Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton (as not the Fifth Doctor and not Nyssa) who are the lone passengers, eager to get to Heathrow (their era's running joke) and don't know what's happening. If you want to fit it into some kind of continuity, it's in the same universe as The Five(ish) Doctors (but see Theories).

Pete McTighe wrote this and more than a dozen others in The Collection. The quality references and clever humor augur well for this line of shorts.

THEORIES: The fact that Davison wakes up with a start near the end of the short could be an Inception moment. What if the Doctor is dreaming of being in human, dreaming of being a Time Lord? Or more straightforwardly, all the nonsense about Zero Cabinets under your seats and so on is in Davison's subconscious - what he hears in his sleep, but not what Tegan actually says - and given how many doppelgangers exist in the Whoniverse, he and Sutton are simply human lookalikes of Tegan's former companions. Of course, what doesn't really jibe with continuity is later TV revelations of what Tegan's been up to, and it's not this.

REWATCHABILITY: Medium -
It's just a lot of fun to see these actors again and the jokes do land. (See what I did there?)
