There are two lady fights in the event, and the first stars a couple of anti-heroes...
For DC: CatwomanAt her best? At her best-selling, probably, but I think it would be controversial to say she was at her best. But I guess it depends on who you are.
Her advantage: One of DC's most recognizable "villains". That Batman association.
For Marvel: Elektra
At her best? Well, at least she's not dead. She had JUST been reintroduced in Chichester's Daredevil run after a decade-long absence.
Her advantage: More of a "combattant". That Frank Miller association.
Why this match? Each universe's anti-heroine/femme fatale able to hold a solo book. It's kind of wonky that Elektra is here, when Daredevil didn't get a match (and his dad a boxer, too!).
Were they Amalgamated? Yes, as Catseye (cat/sai), one of the Assassins.
What if they fought their Amalgam Buddy? They did.
Better match-ups: In a perfect world, Catwoman would have been matched with the Black Cat, and I think one could have argued Batman and Spider-Man, the companies' biggest cash cows/box office draws could have been put against one another, too. As for Elektra, if we really need to keep her in the mix, should really be fighting someone like Lady Shiva.
If DC vs. Marvel had been fought today: Neither of these characters are as much of a concern today, especially Elektra. Sure, Catwoman is evergreen, but I'm sure her spot would be taken by Harley Quinn. Her most natural match is, like, Punchline, but are we really going to have Punchline in a big crossover event like this? It would more likely be Deadpool, or if they were insistent on it being an all-female fight, Gwenpool.
Play by Play: It's going to be first scratch to Catwoman, and the fight takes place in Gotham, which SHOULD give Selina an environmental advantage. In fact, I think she has MOST of the advantages.Let's talk about the sai. This evolved as a poor farmer's weapon (it was a digging tool) and its main feature is that it looks badass, even if it's a very limited weapon. It's good for blocking and perhaps snapping a cheap sword blade. Throw it and you lose it. It has little reach as a melee weapon, especially compared to a whip. But Elektra seems to have preternatural strength (from her resurrection?) and gives the Cat a big swing...Result: It ends on a visual pun with Catwoman falling into a sand box after Elektra cuts the whip that's acting as a cat-line. Super-acrobatic Catwoman, who really should fall on her feet at such a low height, or tumble herself back into the construction works, just... falls. I call foul. No. Effing. Way.
Next time: We get into the matches voted by fans, and what is likely the biggest cop-out of them all (but it's a tight race).
