"Can we never have a normal weekend?"
TECHNICAL SPECS: First aired Nov.25 2020. Released as part of Doctor Who: The Collection - Season 8 and available on YouTube.IN THIS ONE... Jo and Cliff fight off a new Auton invasion.
REVIEW: Since the advert part of the short will shill for Season 8, which starts with the return of the Autons and the introduction of Jo Grant (and the Master, but he doesn't figure here), the crew have recreated the Auton carnival guys for Jo to defeat (even they're never in the same frame together). Amusingly, it starts with Cliff walking in with one of those dangerous plastic jonquils, complaining about plastics and pollution, which is right in line with his character from The Green Death. Jo recognizes it as something worse, runs outside and sees the Autons. The resolution, after the advert.
And we're back. The solution is somehow right out of an old Doctor Who role-playing session I ran where a player used his iPod to blast the monsters with the right frequency song. In our game, it was Bohemian Rhapsody. In the short, Jo "keeps it in the family" and it's her twins' new song (we don't hear it). Anyway, it puts all the Autons to sleep, and UNIT be damned - they shouldn't have put Cliff on hold. So it's all quite amusing, ties into Jo's extended family as established in The Sarah Jane Adventures, and as usual, Katy Manning is a charm.
REWATCHABILITY: High - Katy Manning keeps proving that she could have had her own Doctor Who spin-off and makes her Collection shorts THE Collection shorts to watch for.
