DC vs. Marvel had plenty of other match-ups, some with one company's heroes vs. the other's villains, and some between characters of the same alignment that theoretically COULD have counted towards each universe's total. I'm putting up the alternate fights today (in order of appearance)...
Punisher vs. DeathstrokeWhy this match? The two gun-toting anti-heroes with names based on 70s crime novels (if we go with Terminator), makes sense, though Deadpool has the better claim to be Deathstroke's dancing partner.
Were they Amalgamated? No. Frank Castle was merged with Steve Trevor, of all people (for a Bullets & Bracelets comic), and Slade with Daredevil, where he became Dare the Terminator, a female assassin that also incorporates Rose Wilson, probably.
Probable result: Deathstroke is probably over-powered compared to the Punisher, but not by much, so I want to give it to Frank on tenacity alone.
The Demon vs. Ghost Rider
Why this match? The two demonic anti-heroes.
Were they Amalgamated? Yes, but the Flash was thrown into the mix as well. Speed Demon got his own comic.
Probable result: Etrigan by a mile... unless they let the public vote. The Fantastic Four vs. Firestorm and the Martian Manhunter(?!)
Why this match? If you were going to put the FF in the arena as a unit, I think the Manhunter from Mars is a really good match, his varied powers matching those of the opposing team... except for where the Human Torch is concerned, because J'Onn's weakness is fire. Enter: Firestorm. But it feels rather random.
Were they Amalgamated? The FF were merged with their prototype, the Challengers of the Unknown, and the Challs of the Fantastic got their own book on the second run of issues. J'Onn was combined with Bishop and Professor X (as Mister X), while Firestorm merged with Sunfire (as Sunstorm); neither is particularly satisfying.
Probable result: While both DC heroes have the potential to beat almost anyone in the Marvel Universe, the FF's experience dealing with Omega-level threats means this is their fight to win.
Doctor Strange vs. Starman
Why this match? They both live in a place full of weird doodads? With all due respect to Jack Knight, this should have been Dr. Fate's panel... except Jared Stevens was "Fate" at this point. Oh boy.
Were they Amalgamated? Doctor Strangefate (see????) got his own comic, while Jack was eventually merged with Thunderstrike (as Starstrike II). So no.
Probable result: Magic vs. science is all well and good, but a virtual rookie vs. the Sorcerer Supreme? Come on now.
Hawkman vs. Archangel
Why this match? The two winged heroes, both of which have been subjected to controversial transformations.
Were they Amalgamated? Yes, Angelhawk was a member of the Judgement League Avengers.
Probable result: Even with his blade wings, I think Hawkman is the best fighter.
Supergirl vs. She-Hulk
Why this match? Two heroines derivative of some of each company's biggest names, and both are superstrong.
Were they Amalgamated? No, they merged She-Hulk and Blue Devil (as She-Devil, I see what they did there), and Supergirl and Bucky (as American Girl) to keep the Superman/Cap combo.
Probable result: As we saw in Superman vs. the Hulk, a Kryptonian beats a Gamma-irradiated hero 99 times out of a hundred.Nightwing vs. Gambit
Why this match? Good fighters with sticks... rather weak.
Were they Amalgamated? Nightwing and Moon Knight were amalgamated to give us Moonwing (in the SHIELD book), while Gambit was in JLX as Wraith, amalgamated with Obsidian.
Probable result: Despite Remi's mutant powers, I give it to Dick Grayson every time.Darkseid vs. Thanos
Why this match? The latter was based on the former. This is easy.
Were they Amalgamated? Yes, Thanoseid was the big bad in Thorion of the New Asgods.
Probable result: These guys were actually a big deal in the mini-series, and the heroes all had to team up against them in the 4th issue, as they tried to take advantage of the situation created by the Amalgam Giants. But had they fought, Thanos would have been able to move in with his lover Death. Omega beams for the win.
And that wraps our retro-look at DC vs. Marvel. What are the fights YOU would have liked to see circa 1996?
