Doctor Who #1086: Risen

"Long have I waited, imprisoned in this endless void..."

TECHNICAL SPECS: First aired Oct.7 2021. Released as part of Doctor Who: The Collection - Season 17 and available on YouTube.

IN THIS ONE... A prequel to Destiny of the Daleks.

REVIEW: They do a lot with little here. Something to be played just before Destiny of the Daleks, kind of in the style of all those NuWho minisodes that promote that week's episode. We move in on the cave where the TARDIS is to land. We see some special effects of a saucer approaching Skaro. We hear Davros's inner monologue - or perhaps his recorded memoirs - talking about his "children" coming to finally get him. It works quite well. And when we DO see Davros, he looks just like he did in Destiny, so "revamp", which is quite cool. In fact, they have David Gooderson, who played Davros in that serial, reprise the role after all these years. His voice has a more strident, mechanized sound than more recent portrayals by Julian Bleach. Again, this puts us right at the beginning of Season 17, and aside from SFX shot, could have played on the Beeb that week. Nostalgic and fun.

VERSIONS: AKA "Davros Rises!"

REWATCHABILITY: Medium - It's fairly slim in terms of story, but a fine and very atmospheric prequel/teaser for Destiny of the Daleks.
