IN THIS ONE... Queen Peri visits her husband's memorial.
REVIEW: Catching up with Peri at Yrcanos's tomb (nice statue) is a joy, especially if you're into the extra-canon. Anyone who's listened to Peri and Piscon Paradox (from Big Finish) will realize our girl has multiple competing timelines. Happily so, since one of her fates is being lobotomized in Mindwarp. Of course, fans like to joke that marrying her off to Brian Blessed's outrageous alien king is a fate worse than even that. Well, in Big Finish's best possible timeline, Peri stays with Yrcanos (happily, it would seem) until he dies, then travels with the Doctor again. And not only does this short acknowledge that as the truth, but also winks at the timeline presented in The Age of Chaos, a comics story where Queen Peri wears the same secretive hooded robe. It's a love letter to all the what-might-have-beens.
And let's not ignore the guest star, Leo Flanagan as a Jedi--I mean a Krontep warrior--who finds Peri in the forbidden temple, reveals she has passed into legend on their planet, and discovers he has a lot in common with her - a need for adventure and a stepfather who'd rather he stay home. Colin Baker's voice is heard from the TARDIS, and the sassy banter between these two old friends is fun. Rex walks into the TARDIS... One even hopes he might show up in the Big Finish adventures at some point.
REWATCHABILITY: High - As far as these shorts go, this is a highlight. Slightly longer than normal, and loving to ALL of the Doctor/Peri stories, not just the televised ones.
