Dropping a Crimson Fog pellet allows the Crimson (I still call him that) to hide and hit a large force with impunity - or as presented, in a rare (for the era) "ghost image" panel.
Worked great until somebody flipped a ventilation lever and the Nazis are able to overcome the Crimson. Oh well.
