Who's This? A human Lantern.
The facts: Jade is the daughter of the original Green Lantern and first appeared with the rest of Infinity Inc. in All-Star Squadron #25 (September 1983) before going on to be one of the main characters of that team's series, and possibly the most enduring of the group. While many other Infinitors dropped off the map, she would become Kyle Rayner's girlfriend in the 90s, become a Green Lantern herself, and go on to lead the Outsiders. She's killed in the Rann-Thanagar War, but is resurrected in Blackest Night, first as a zombie Black Lantern, then as her true self by the Life Entity. She later goes on to join the Justice League AND the Justice Society of America, which she leads today. How you could have heard of her: In addition to appearing in the current JSA series, she has appeared on the Stargirl television series, played by Ysa Penarejo.
Example story: Showcase'93 #7 (July 1993) "Image Is Everything" by Michael J. Martinek, Andrew Kudelka and Kevin NowlanOne of Jade's gigs since the beginning was acting. The green skin requires make-up in most situations, but it's the DCU so, like Beast Boy before her, she's typecast as a green person, for which there are SOME roles. So this weird opening to a Jade & Obsidian story is actually a perfume ad that she filmed:Jealousy - by Ardent Chris. For when your performer comes with her own special effects. Near nudity. The year is 1993. The production crew think it's hot, Obsidian - her fraternal twin brother - thinks it's dumb. But this isn't about the wild life of celebrity nepo-babies, it's a superhero comic, so a weird thing has to happen on the way out of the studio. Like everyone getting lost inside what I will call a DeMatteis trap. That's when what you expect to be a normal superhero story suddenly turns into a psychedelic experience.Jade throws up some energy pulses, kind of like a photonic kind of echolocation, and finds the exit. Or actually, the way to the villain... Mister McEscher! What, Count Vertigo, Spellbinder and Mirage weren't available? Note that though she's Alan Scott's daughter, her go-to is a Hal Jordan classic baseball mitt. The shame! But McEscher's disorientation powers make him pretty impossible to hit, and his attacks impossible to avoid. So what's his problem anyway? Well, he hates on Jade because her special effects compete with his industrial light and magic. Time for a new environment:Jade hit her head, but soon comes to, none the worst for wear, and the kids decide it's time to show team work. After all, what's the point of matching a light and a dark character if they can't pull off some stunts together (also see: Cloak and Dagger, preceding these two by a year and a half). Obsidian can't conjure his shadow because of the flat lighting, so...They trap McEscher IN the shadow form, through which Jade shoots some green bonds, and though captured, the villain has the last laugh: "You've stopped me with your STYLELESS powers." That's a burn even Hal Jordan feels from wherever he is. McEscher gets a contract for a soft drink ad out of it. It's showbiz, folks.
While Jenny didn't have a problem finding (superhero) work in the comics, and even Todd, to a lesser extent, this makes me wonder what would have happened if they'd stayed together as a duo and headed their own "Light & Dark" series. We've never really had siblings do that since the original Hawk and Dove, and those guys didn't like each other. Or am I forgetting anyone? The Wonder Twins, I guess.
Who's Next? An Olympic villain.
