I'm a Forever GM, so I'm hardly ever a player in games, but I've been involved in a Call of Cthulhu game on that side of the table for a while now. In the latest storyline, the Keeper has careened us off into what I - with no deep knowledge of CoC, mind you - have surmised are the Dreamlands. This is a fantasy world created by Lovecraft for a certain cycle of stories, with protagonists entering it through their dreams, and surely going mad. Naturally, Chaosium had to integrate this side-world in their game, and I remember the books looking particularly gorgeous. Whether our characters were in the Dreamlands or not (I don't remember falling asleep, so it's probably some entirely different dimension), it made me curious and so here's a random critter from that setting.
Monster: Cat from Saturn
Game/Product: Call of Cthulhu/Creatures from the Dreamlands; stats from Dreamlands 2nd. ed.Writing: Sandy Petersen. Art: Mark J. Ferrari
Origin: The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by H.P. Lovecraft. According to that story, in the Dreamlands, the planet Saturn is populated by a race of strange cats, who occasionally travel to the dark side of Earth's moon. They are enemies of the cats of Earth. Sandy Petersen filled in a lot of the details for the RPG version. Ferrari's art for it isn't very cat-like, while other artists' renditions were. Below: Michael Bukowski's version (my go-to for a lot of Lovecraft art), the Cat from the Elder Sign game, and the version from the French translation of Call of Cthulhu.Fear Level: It's right there in the stats. 0/1d4 SAN, so not very high at all. Being on the Dark Side of the Moon to encounter one in real space would probably be scarier for a 1930s investigator. Add a die if you're a Cat of Earth.
Danger Level: Lesser Independent Race. It has a malignant personality, but let me ask you, was the entry written by a dog person?
Famous examples: In the game, there seem to be different types. Butterfly-Dragons are reptilian with insectoid limbs and wings. Minions of Karakal have spark-like limbs and dark bodies. And Zoogs are brown, furry and much smaller. Would you believe there are also Cats from Uranus?
I wonder if: Cats from Saturn would win a fight against Kitlings from Doctor Who.
