Reaganocomics: Courting the Rogue Vote

Ronald Reagan is a popular figure in 1980s comics, and while he has his detractors (as we saw last week), he also has his appreciators, as an anonymous commenter proved when he sent me this from Uncanny X-Men #201 (1986):
I bet this is one incident he won't be mentioning to Nancy! He just has to make sure the Secret Service wipes Rogue's lipstick off Air Force One's window before he takes his wife anywhere with it. Let's hope he doesn't forget while he's meeting with... Mystique?! Ronnie's problems are just beginning!

My knowledge of early 90s X-Men mainly comes from the cartoon series, so I'm curious... why is Ms "Ah can't tuch ya Remy!" playing baseball in her underwear?

Ah, the decisive issue where the depowered Storm beats Cyclops in the right to lead the X-Men. I thought it was fantastic, even if it later got retconned. Sigh.

I had forgotten that Reagan has a cameo in this issue.

Snooker is a non-contact sport. Doesn't mean that I'd play it in my undies.

(It's not being prudish. It's just something I really don't get with her personality. Skin on skin contact is literally dangerous.)

Most of the X-people used to hang around in swimming costumes in this era (boys and girls) when relaxing at the mansion. At least, they did during summer months.

I suppose from Rogue's point of view, it's probably the safest she can get, hanging with the X-Men in her bathing gear. At least, everyone is aware of the risk...

Claremont had Rogue carry herself as a bit of a tease. This was well before Remy, or really any situation where things were serious enough that, in her off-time, she would need to be covered from head to toe.

In a game where you're allowed to use your powers, going up against batters like Colossus, why NOT show a lot of power-absorbing skin? It would make the opposite team think twice before sliding to your base.

Of course, Rogue was in the outfield, which is a good position for a flyer, and well away from most other players. When the team goes on the offense, do you dare try to tag Rogue out?

Fair enough. I just always thought she had a servere fear of touching someone. Either that was downplayed at that point in time, or cheesecake outweighs logic.

I don't remember Claremont playing up the feat this particular point. Or maybe he turned the angst on and off, according to the story.

Claremont didn't mind playing up the angst with Rogue, but there was also a lack of anyone actively trying to put their hands on her. All the guys were into somebody else (Scott / Madelyne, Peter / Kitty, Kurt / his sister), so Rogue could be a little sassy and flirty without having to worry about anyone responding.

And yeah, cheesecake does outweigh logic, which is something Claremont was no stranger to.
